Elsecar village contains some superb examples of industrial heritage - Elsecar Heritage Centre, the Newcomen beam engine (the only one still in its original location) and the Elsecar branch of the Barnsley/Dearne/Dove canal.
The village itself, a conservation area, contains fine examples of workers' cottages dating from the early 1800s.
Close by are Worsbrough Mill (still producing stone-ground flour) and Wentworth Castle - home to a National collection of rhodedenrons and azaleas, and recently runner up in the BBC Restoration series.
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is well worth a visit - just two junctions away on the M1 motorway - J38.
